The Sajama volcano is the highest peak in Bolivia, the "Bolivian roof". It is located in the southwest of the department of Oruro in the Province of Sajama, bordering the department of La Paz to the north and to the west with the Lauca National Park of Chile. It is part of the volcanic Western mountain range.

Description

The voluminous volcano is part of a protected area, Bolivia's Sajama National Park. 
What stands out in this area, guarded by the giant, is its queñua forests (Polylepis tarapacana), which can grow above 5,200m, being the highest woody formation in the world. In addition, the wetlands with large Yaretales and humid grasslands.
In August 2001, a group of Bolivian high mountain guides established, at the initiative of the Bolivian Andean Club, a world record as impressive as it was unusual: they played the highest altitude soccer match in the world on the top of the volcano.
You can see this mountain from the Cordillera Real on a clear day, most mountaineers want to reach its summit and stand at the highest point in Bolivia.


Itinerary

Day 1/ la paz - national park sajama 4.200.

We leave at 07:00 a.m. From La Paz we will drive for about four hours (we have to cross the city of La Paz and El Alto) on the way we will see the transition from the city to the immense, arid plateau, we will make a few stops to visit the Chullpares (ruins of the Mollo culture ), and the valley of rocks, both very picturesque and with incredible views. We will arrive at the town of Sajama in the afternoon, we will still have time to take a walk to the Montecielo viewpoint and enjoy the beautiful view, we will rest in a family house/

Day 2/ sajama town - high camp 5.700m.

After a good breakfast we will organize our equipment and take our 4x4 to drive for about 40 minutes to almost 4,865m. Our team of porters will be ready to help us carry our equipment to the high camp at 5,700 m. usually 3 to 4 hours of walking/night in a tent.

Day 3/ high camp - summit sajama 6.542m.- sajama town

We need to start early, 01:00 a.m. The first part of the approach to the glacier is moraine until reaching the 70m gallery. which will take us to a rock ridge (this is the technical part) then we will just touch the glacier, and we will begin a constant climb doing many zig zags until we reach the summit, it generally takes about 6 to 7 hours, after enjoying the view we will return along the same route until we reach our high camp we will rest for an hour and continue the descent until our 4x4, will be ready to take us back to the town of Sajama where we will spend the last night at the family's house

Day 3/ Hot springs - la paz

After having rested we will have our breakfast, then we will go to enjoy the hot springs, we will return to the town of Sajama to have lunch, and in the afternoon we will return to the city of La Paz.
