Acotango is a stratovolcano that like other volcanoes in the area, is covered by snow above 5500m. It has a central crater open to the North as a result of a large lateral explosion that expelled a lava flow towards the Northwest.
The main ascent route are the north ridge(F), access is from the Bolivian town of Chachacomani.
Basically it is a hike at high altitude, in the months of February-Mach- April- May-June-July-August, crampons are necessary, in the months of September-October-November, well-warmed trekking shoes will be enough.
We leave at 07:00 a.m. From La Paz we will drive for about four hours (we have to cross the city of La Paz and El Alto) on the way we will see the transition from the city to the immense, arid plateau, we will make a few stops to visit the Chullpares (ruins of the Mollo culture ), and the valley of rocks, both very picturesque and with incredible views. We will arrive at the town of Sajama in the afternoon, we will still have time to take a walk to the Montecielo viewpoint and enjoy the beautiful view, we will rest in a family house/
After a good breakfast at the family house, we take our 4x4 and we will drive for about two hours until we reach the base of the mountain 5,500m. From here we will begin a sand walk through the middle of the crater until we reach the north ridge. At this point it is necessary to use crampons (this will depend on the conditions of the mountain) and we will continue the walk along the ridge until we reach the summit 6,052 m. After enjoying the beautiful view we will return along the same route to our transportation that will take us back to the town of Sajama to rest a little and then take a shower in the thermal guides./night at the family home
We will have a hearty breakfast and then drive to the geysers for a last walk before returning to the city of La Paz.
